For those who like to....go that extra mile for charity!

For those who like to....go that extra mile for charity! When it comes to old- fashioned road travel, it doesn’t come more traditional than the horse drawn gypsy caravan or ‘bowtop’ as they are known. But couple this with a journey of 1000 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End plus a mission to raise over Ł10,000 for charity, and you have a slightly more contemporary twist!

The brainchild of Jayne Purcell-White and friends, the concept evolved over dinner one evening, when the six friends decided that each had very close personal experiences with either cancer, cerebral palsy or special care baby units and they all felt that it was time to give something back. Jayne explains:

“All of us share the love of the amazing traditional gypsy cob and thought how we could combine a challenge that would hopefully grab the public’s imagination and pockets, whilst indulging in our passion for being with these horses. The result is ‘Driven For Charity’, which will raise money for CLIC Sargent (Caring for Children with Cancer), Scope, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Poole Hospital, Dorset.”

All the money raised will be shared out amongst the four charities. The friends, plus Jayne’s two children and three dogs, will start the journey on 19th July from John O’Groats and cover at least 25 miles a day with two bowtops over 6 weeks. Most of this journey will involve the team of friends going on foot in order to spare the horses, due to the supplies and loads in the bowtops. The horses will, however, be well cared for nutritionally, as Saracen Horse Feeds are supplying the three horses with feed, as Jayne explains:

“We approached Saracen Horse Feeds, as we have been using their feed for many years, with much success. Their feeds are top quality and, together with the Saracen Nutritionist, we will be able to tailor our cobs’ feed requirements exactly. We are delighted that Saracen Horse Feeds are supporting us in this mammoth journey! Healthy, happy horses are key to our success, and we know from past experience that they produce excellent feeds with great nutritional benefits.”
